Holy mackerel! What a big crowd we had last night at the pub for our 15th annual Kentucky Derby handicapping extravaganza! We packed the house with well over 100 people and got through the major races in record time while having a lot of fun. Like I said earlier, this week the Kentucky Derby is a fabulous betting race (maybe the best betting race all year) and brings everyone's attention to the great sport of horse racing. On top of being a great race to pick a long shot and make big money, The Derby also kicks off the summer racing season. Up here in the great northeast everybody starts looking forward to the Preakness then on to the Grand Daddy of them all; the Belmont Stakes at Beautiful Belmont Park! Then of course, on to the summer place to be; The Holy Grail, the hallowed ground of Saratoga Race Course. For all the punters out there who haven’t really come to a solid decision yet on who they are going to put their money on here are some of the picks from our panel of experts:
Trodder Furlong: 2. Suddenbreakingnews, 13. Nyquist, 10. Whitmore
Tom Amello: 11. Exaggerator, 9. Destin, 13. Nyquist, 18. Majesto
Jeff Carle: 13. Nyquist, 2. Suddenbreakingnews, 5. Gun Runner, 20. Danzing Candy
As you can see a lot of these horses will pay a big price and that's what our group was looking for. Because many times betting isn't always winning on a short price horse, it's capitalizing on the outcome of the race! A horse that may close from out of the clouds to get a piece of the pie and pay big is sometimes much more satisfying than winning on the short odds favorite!
Our next event will be on June 9th at the Pub where we will be handicapping the Belmont Stakes and hopefully like the past two years, we'll have a horse going for the Triple Crown with a large contingent of challengers trying to spoil the fun! It will make for another very exciting third leg of the Triple Crown!
Also watch for the date of our next backstretch clinic and tour of the Oklahoma track to kick off our summer on-going owner immersion program. This 2 hour Saturday morning walk about starts on the Oklahoma backstretch with coffee and donuts. We start at one of our trainer’s barns for a conformation clinic, watch horse’s train and end up at Gate school with NYRA gate guru Bob (Robert Redford) Duncan. We end the morning at the Pub with an authentic Irish Breakfast. We will get you up close and personal with a fine equine athlete and fill your face to boot! Fun for the whole family, friends, and horse enthusiasts. RSVP required as spots are limited so watch for the date in late may early June!
For those of you who would like a more personal tour and are interested in hearing more about our horses and partnership opportunities during the Saratoga meet, please call the office and set it up now as dates are already booking up. If you like horses and you want to learn more it's a great place to see the morning action. No obligation and as always free and open to the horse loving public!
Lots of ways for us to get together and as always I'm looking forward to saying hello to all of you out there in Horse Racing Land. Don’t forget there is always time for another horse tale (not tail) over a pint of stout, it's my favorite past time and a great excuse to say, "Hey barkeep, line ‘em up and Oh Yes Please, I’ll have another!"
